Surfer, Chemist, and Journalist Cliff Kapono was just eleven years old when he made a decision that would change the course of his life.  
 
Cliff decided to pursue an opportunity to further his education, which eventually led him to earn a Ph D in chemistry. After living away for many years, he returned home to Hilo where he has since been surfing waves like he never left. His specialization in science provides him with the opportunity to show others how we all are connected to nature. This knowledge and expertise enable him to speak on ideas surrounding human and environmental connection, similar to his Hawaiian ancestors.  
 
Cliff believes that if people understand how they are affecting the things around them, then they can begin to affect their surroundings and environment in a positive way.
