As part of its ongoing efforts to provide a mainstream platform for indigenous talent, Warner Music India's 'Maati (माटी)', is a national platform for Indian folk music, its purest forms and its artists, to showcase their raw, unadulterated talent.
This tribal folk song in the Sambalpuri dialect of Odisha where the artist Sona Mohapatra has her roots is a love song to a tree & an ode to the balance in nature.
The soundscape of this song produced by Ram Sampath is a hybrid of urban Afro dance sounds & Indian roots music. The central guitar motif is a tribute to the folk instruments of India & Africa that bind an entire song over a single melodic idea.
The music video is inspired by a pre-vedic, ancient Odiya festival, Rawjaw which honours the bleeding Goddess Mother Earth, a symbol of fertility & celebrates femininity and the ability to give birth to another life; the miracle of life... Derived from a Sanskrit word ‘Rajaswala’; menstruating woman.
The festival in current times is celebrated for three days in Odisha. It is believed that Mother Earth needs rest & nurturing while she bleeds hence all agricultural activities like digging, ploughing, sowing is stopped within these days. It is believed that after the three days of Rawjaw, Mother Earth turns fertile and then the sowing period starts hoping for abundance in the quality and quantity of crops sown.
During Rawjaw, womanhood is celebrated with ‘pithas’, special food, sweets & new clothes for women. Swings are decorated with flowers & the sisterhood sing’s, dance’s & plays together. The taboo around menstruation is meant to be shattered too.
These cultural roots & rituals symbolise the respect accorded to the miracle of birth & woman’s unique power to create life.
Dear Sisterhood, hold your head high and proudly say – “YES, WE BLEED!”
Love,
Sona
