Dr. Sudhir Roy (Amitabh Bachchan) and Dr. Prashant Chaturvedi (Vinod Mehra) meet Ms. Kavita Goel (Raakhee) on a holiday and start meeting her regularly. Though he himself was interested in Kavita, Sudhir recommends Prashant to her for marriage. When she asks why he himself can't marry her, Sudhir narrates his flashback.  
 
Sudhir was the second son of a poor school teacher and hopes that his big brother would get a job and provide for them. But when his big brother becomes mentally ill and his father dies, he resorts to petty thieving. When police catch him, the Magistrate recognizes him and adopts him. Sudhir grows up along with the magistrate's son Prashant and receives same education and becomes a pediatrician. Now he tells her that he can't marry her on medical grounds as his brother was a psychiatric patient and he has a criminal background.

डॉ. सुधीर रॉय (अमिताभ बच्चन) और डॉ. प्रशांत चतुर्वेदी (विनोद मेहरा) सुश्री कविता गोयल (राखी) से छुट्टी के दिन मिलते हैं और उनसे नियमित रूप से मिलना शुरू करते हैं। हालाँकि वह खुद कविता में दिलचस्पी रखता था, सुधीर प्रशांत को उससे शादी करने की सलाह देता है। जब वह पूछती है कि वह खुद उससे शादी क्यों नहीं कर सकता, तो सुधीर अपना फ्लैशबैक सुनाता है।  
 
सुधीर एक गरीब स्कूल शिक्षक का दूसरा बेटा था और उसे उम्मीद थी कि उसके बड़े भाई को नौकरी मिलेगी और वह उनका भरण-पोषण करेगा। लेकिन जब उसका बड़ा भाई मानसिक रूप से बीमार हो जाता है और उसके पिता की मृत्यु हो जाती है, तो वह छोटी-मोटी चोरियां करता है। जब पुलिस उसे पकड़ती है तो मजिस्ट्रेट उसे पहचान लेता है और उसे गोद ले लेता है। सुधीर मजिस्ट्रेट के बेटे प्रशांत के साथ बड़ा होता है और वही शिक्षा प्राप्त करता है और बाल रोग विशेषज्ञ बन जाता है। अब वह उससे कहता है कि वह चिकित्सा आधार पर उससे शादी नहीं कर सकता क्योंकि उसका भाई एक मनोरोग रोगी था और उसकी आपराधिक पृष्ठभूमि है।
