Arctic Ocean Mixing and Impacts on Stratification: Physical Oceanography September Meeting 2024
The Arctic is a strongly stratified ocean, due in particular to strong freshwater inputs and limited exchange with the surrounding oceans. At the same time, mixing rates are small, but expected to increase with reducing sea ice cover and increased storminess. In this session, the Physical Oceanography Community of Practice discussed insights on mixing processes in the Arctic Ocean and their impact on its stratification. Stephanie Waterman (University of British Columbia) presented "Filling in the Map: Understanding Arctic Ocean mixing rates, mechanisms and space-time geography from ocean observations."
